FIVE LARGEST CITIES OF NORTHERN IRELAND

Northern Irland

Northern Ireland is one of the United Kingdom's four constituent nations. It is situated at the northernmost point of Ireland's island, sharing its land boundary with the Republic of Ireland towards the south.

The country has a population of more than 1.8 million. This represents roughly 30% of the overall population of Ireland and 3% of the UK's total population. Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital city. Belfast together with Lisburn, Derry, Newtownabbey, and Bangor are Northern Ireland’s five largest cities.

Belfast
As mentioned before it is the countries capital city. The population of Belfast in 2021 is expected to be 634,594. The city has a population of 445,859 in 1950. Since 2015, the population of Belfast has increased by 3,962, a 0.63 % yearly increase. Belfast, being a main port in the nineteenth century, played an important part in the Industrial Revolution. The city is also well-known for its contributions to the shipbuilding sector, particularly in relation to the construction of the RMS Titanic.

Lisburn
The population of Lisburn is estimated to be 76068 in 2021. Before Queen Elizabeth II awarded city status to Lisburn in 2002, it was a borough. The Belfast Metropolitan Area encompasses it. The town has a marine climate, which is marked by warm winters and cool summers.

Derry
Derry has an estimated population of 83,650 people in 2020-2021. The city is also known as Londonderry and is famous for Derry’s Walls which stayed untouched since the seventeenth century. The city is one of Ireland’s oldest continually inhabited areas, as shown by the numerous historic sites.

Newtownabbey
The population of Newtownabbey is around 65,656. It is situated north of Belfast. Cavehill and Fortwilliam golf course divide it from the rest of Belfast, making it appear to be a suburb. It is both a residential region and a center for computer and engineering businesses. In 1958, the villages of Carnmoney, Whiteabbey, Jordanstown, Whitehouse, Glengormley, Monkstown, and Whitewell merged to become Newtownabbey. The Belfast Rural District Council had authority over the area prior to its formation.

Bangor
Bangor has a population of 76,403 people in 2021. It is located on Belfast Lough's southern shore. It is Northern Ireland's oldest city, yet it is also one of the UK's smallest. Bangor received city status from the Queen in 1974 and is now located in Down County. University students make up the majority of Bangor's population. Bangor is a popular tourist destination in Northern Ireland, having attractions such as the North Down Museum and the Bangor Marina.
